The Thoughts of Nicholas Cooper I

A Pixel of Nostalgia

I should be asleep right now, but I can’t sleep. I keep thinking about the days when I was up on every video game. I keep thinking about the days when I would pore over every word of my Electronic Gaming Magazine, a subscription I held from the days of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in 2002 until its unexpected and sad closure this past December due to the economy. I used to know my stuff about even the most obscure releases, except for that shovel ware on Game Boy Advance.

The days of me knowing my stuff were over. I did not even realize that “the most anticipated release of the year” Call of Duty: Modern Combat 2, was coming out. I did know that DJ Hero and Dragon Age: Origins were coming our, so small victories. BTW, does anyone know what type of RPG Dragon Age is? Is it an Oblivion/Fallout 3 Action/RPG, a Final Fantasy-type RPG, or a Baldur’s Gate/ Neverwinter Nights type RPG?

I remember the days when I would be on Gamespot.com during E3 in May finding information about games that were popular to games that were least likely to get published in the US or games that were destined to be vaporware. This past July, I barely knew E3 was occuring.

It does make me sad that I no longer really care about video games. They used to be a passion. I don’t know why I no longer care. Maybe its because every new release seems to be a music rhythm game that is a knockoff of Rock Band or a FPS based on modern or futuristic warfare? (Anyone else remember the days when the problem was WWII shooters? Remember when Call of Duty was a WWII game? Same with Battlefield). Perhaps its because I cannot afford video games. The newest game I have is Bioshock, which was released over a year ago. Maybe its because I can never find the time or will to go in-depth with a game, and games nowadays require more than a quick play.

I remember the days when I would wake up early on Saturday mornings to play Simpsons: Road Rage. I now can’t play that game even if I wanted to because the load times on that game would drive me crazy. I think I could do all my homework during those load times. Seriously. Now, I barely have the will to play a game on a Thursday night when I have time.

I do like the casual games on Xbox Live Arcade. I do play those for a quick fix.

Perhaps I should subscribe to Game Informer or go to Gamestop.com every day to catch up on my video gaming. That doesn’t seem like a bad idea actually. It would be like good old times.

Cody it is true that there are tons of copies of rock band and CoD: Modern Warfare but this is just the same as the days of old. If you look back to before these games hit it big in the begining of the 00s it was alot of fighting games due to the popularity of Dead or Alive series and Tekken. Now these series are on the back burner. But you saw copy cats all over the place. Such as Soul Calibur and Marvel and Capcom games. And i dare say that the only reason Super Smash was revived was due to DoA.

Don’t EVER insult Soul Calibur 2. That game is the epitome of awesomeness. Actually, last night I was reminicing of all the fun times we had playing Harvest Moon 64 and Harvest Moon: Back to the Farm…both amazing games (its a shame they pretty much killed the genre).
